INWARD DISCIPLINE
CONFESSION
The practice of confessing our sins to God, and receiving his forgiveness and absolution.
IDEAS FOR PRACTICE
Often times, we have an awareness of our sin, but have not taken time to intentionally confess IT and be released of our burden of guilt. This practice is “transactional” in the sense that it is a way to give the burden of our sin to Jesus, and to receive his love and grace in return.
Confession can be done privately, but sometimes it helps to confess your sins to a trusted friend (James 5:16) who can agree with God in your forgiven-ness.
Confession is relatively simple. You can think of it in three parts:
1. Describe your sin to God (he already knows; there is no shame in admitting it).
2. Express your sorrow. Literally tell God you are sorry.
3. Ask for forgiveness (the answer is always yes).
It may help to use a liturgical prayer like this one:
Most merciful God, I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.
Amen.
Close by reminding yourself that you ARE forgiven. Read 1 John 1:9 over yourself: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
