INWARD DISCIPLINE

RETREAT

The practice of getting away for an intentional time of silence and/or solitude in order to connect more deeply with God.

IDEAS FOR PRACTICE

  • Decide when and how often you’d like to retreat. Annually? Quarterly? Monthly?

  • Decide on a period of time. An afternoon? A full day? An overnight? A multi-day retreat?

  • Based on how long you have for your retreat, consider location:

    • For mini-retreats (<1 day), consider asking a local church if you can sit in their sanctuary or study. Many churches are open during the day for this very purpose.

    • For day-long retreats, consider getting out of your usual routine and location. Drive 30-60 minutes if possible. Seek out a church or, when the weather is nice, a park. Or, ask us for retreat center recommendations in the area.

    • For overnight retreats or multi-day retreats, you are most likely looking for a retreat center. Or something like camping, if that’s up your alley. We can provide recommendations for overnight retreat centers in the area.

  • Come up with a plan for your retreat so that you know how you plan to spend the time. You can always adjust the plan later, but it’s better to sketch out a plan ahead of time rather than to get half-way through your retreat and not know what to do with your time. Do you have a specific purpose or reason for the retreat? Or is it simply to be with God? Ask us for input - we’d be happy to craft a guide for you - or consider going to a retreat center that offers guided retreats (again, we can provide recommendations).
